Marty Friedman - Exhibit A Live in Europe

Exhibit A Live in Europe (2007)

After Marty Friedman’s successful ‘European Loudspeaker 2007’ tour, Mascot Records releases a live CD recorded on several locations during this tour. In spite of the nice cover (a nicely folded digipack), I wonder whether there will be many people who will enjoy this album. Of course it is difficult to ‘feel’ the contact between band and audience on an almost completely instrumental CD. Normally, it is the lead singer’s task to accomplish that and since there is no such person in Marty Friedman’s band, I guess we’ll have to do without it. What annoys me more is the fact that there are hardly any chats between the songs and that there is hardly any audience audible.
In conclusion the only thing left on this first ever live solo CD of Megadeth’s former axeman is a sort of compilation album, more than half filled with songs from Marty’s last two records (Music For Speeding’ and ‘Loudspeaker’). The sound is quite good although a bit dull every now and then. Friedman’s partners in crime are drummer Jeremy Colson (Steve Vai), Chris Catero on bass and guitarist Ron Jarzombek (Watchtower and Spastic Ink), who gets a lot of room for expression next to the Master himself. From ‘Dragon’s Kiss’, Marty’s best ever solo effort, we only get short fragments of the songs ‘Tears’ and ‘Anvils’, his last two albums are represented with a total of nine songs. Last song on the album is the Elvis classic ‘Hound Dog’ featuring Friedman himself on vocals.
